Planning consent for Halvard One at Aberthaw
The first commercial fusion plant in Wales will be built on the site of the old coal power station.
The Welsh Government has granted development consent for Halvard One on the former Aberthaw coal power station site in the Vale of Glamorgan.
The site closed in 2020 after 50 years of burning coal. It keeps a 400 kV grid connection, sea cooling water and a workforce that knows how to run a power station.
Construction starts next spring and will employ 1,200 people at its peak. About 250 permanent jobs follow once the plant is running.
